Meet the volunteers that make the magic happen

By | Blog, How to get a job in International Development, Opportunities, Our amazing team, Setting up a non-profit | No Comments

Our volunteers are incredibly important to us – we literally couldn’t function without them. They help us with everything from campaigns and comms to admin and accounting. If you’ve ever received a school dress, a campaign update, or a video from us, there’s a good chance a One Girl volunteer helped make it happen. They keep our technology humming and our shop singing. They make achieving our mission to educate and empower girls possible. So we do whatever we can to make sure our vollies love working with us as much as we love having their support. Often they have…

Why development partnerships are a lot like falling in love

By | Blog, Our amazing team, Setting up a non-profit, Uganda | No Comments

We have a new partner in our life, and we can’t wait for you to meet them. But before we introduce you, we’ve got to back up a bit to answer one of the most common questions we are asked as a non profit: How does One Girl educate girls? Or, how does One Girl actually reach and educate girls in Sierra Leone and Uganda – and how do we know we’re having an impact? There are lots of ways to answer this question, but the first thing we do is we work in partnership. One Girl as an organisation…

Losing luggage and finding hope: my first trip to Sierra Leone & Uganda

By | Blog, Our amazing team, Setting up a non-profit, Sierra Leone, Uganda | No Comments

Stepping off the plane at 4 AM in Lungi, Sierra Leone, two things hit me immediately. First was the heat – the air is so heavy that it feels like you’re breathing through a warm, wet towel. The second thing was the emptiness – while Freetown is surrounded by large mountains, Lungi is very flat and I could see far, far into the distance without the glow of electricity to obscure the view. Travelling to Sierra Leone and Uganda for a Monitoring and Evaluation trip, I knew I was going to be busy – really busy. Our Programs Manager, Anita,…

6 ways you can help One Girl educate more girls in 2017

By | Amazing Supporters, Blog, Fundraising, Our amazing team | No Comments

It’s only February, but there’s a LOT happening at One Girl HQ. This year we’re growing and hoping to provide access to education for more girls than ever before. But here’s the thing – we can’t do it alone. We need YOU if we’re going to get there. Here are 6 ways that you can help us this year. 1. Buy your gifts at the One Girl shop! Is there anything better than a one stop shop for gifts for family, friends and…let’s be real…ourselves? We’ve been filling the One Girl Shop with all new goodies for 2017 including tote…

How scrolling through Facebook led me to a decision that changed my life

By | Blog, How to get a job in International Development, Our amazing team | One Comment

It was late on a Monday night and, like all good law students, I was scrolling through Facebook instead of studying. A friend had tagged me in a video, and I clicked through to watch. I had no idea my life was about to change completely. It’s a video you might have seen it yourself actually… The video finished and I took a breath. Swivelling around on my chair I gestured at the screen to my partner: “that’s my job.” He laughed. “You’re not looking for a job.” “No,” I told him. “You don’t understand. THAT’S my job.” It’s true…

It’s back to school for these girls!

By | Blog, Our amazing team, Sierra Leone | No Comments

Something very special happened in Sierra Leone last week. For 300 girls, it was a moment they’d been looking forward to for months, and for some, maybe even years… they started a new school year! Sierra Leone runs on a September – June academic year, so for the past two months our in-country Programs Coordinator, Emmanuel (who you met in our previous blog) and his team have been flat out. If you’ve ever had to get 1-2 kids back to school you’ll know how much running around that can take. So imagine getting 300 girls ready! And this year things were…

Meet our miracle man on the ground: Emmanuel

By | Blog, Our amazing team, Sierra Leone | One Comment

Even before I had met him, I had heard a lot about One Girls Program Coordinator in Sierra Leone, Emmanuel Kamara. This is the man behind lots of the work that makes our programs tick. He coordinates our LaunchPad program, the Scholarship program, as well as liaising with the team in the Business Brains program; you could say he is our trail-blazer working on the ground in Sierra Leone. He does the big things and the small things. He co-ordinates hundreds of scholars, our LaunchPad Champions, visits communities, builds up relationships with parents and schools and community leaders, personally delivers our scholars’ materials (like…

We have a new CEO!

By | Blog, Our amazing team | 6 Comments

We have some massive news to share with you! You might remember, our search for our new CEO started off with a heartfelt call from our team, asking you to send great people our way… Which you all liked, shared and commented on in a frenzy! The response to our call? Was nothing short of staggering. We received a HUGE number of applications. And the applicants? Were humbling to say the least. We had hoped and dreamed that inspired and experienced people would want to work with us, and the reality of seeing the high-calibre of applicants was mind-blowing. It…
