16 and a mother of two: how Fatu chose freedom over fear

By | Blog, Girl's story, Sierra Leone | No Comments

Fatu’s story started out like so many of the girls we work with. Her parents were poor, and living in a rural Sierra Leone community. They wanted more for Fatu than they could offer her themselves, so they sent her to Freetown to live with her aunt. There she was able to be enrolled in school, and she thrived. She was in grade six at primary school and was just about to make the big move to high school. But tragedy struck. Fatu’s aunt passed away. With no other family in Freetown, she was forced to go back to her…

Meet Amy: Writer, Parkour Practitioner, One Girl Ambassador

By | Amazing Supporters, Blog, Do It In A Dress, Opportunities | No Comments

Our One Girl Ambassadors are an inspiring bunch. They’re our dreamers, our doers, our trailblazers, and revolutionaries. They’re the people in our community who stand up and advocate for girls’ education, and push themselves outside of their comfort zone to lead a movement all about empowering and educating girls. That makes them our kind of people. We’ve recently opened up applications to join us and become a One Girl Ambassador, and one of the questions that has come up is “what kind of people are we looking for?” The truth is, there isn’t one answer – our Ambassadors are a diverse…

What happens when women support each other?

By | Blog, Girl's story, LaunchPad, Sierra Leone | One Comment

“When women support each other, incredible things happen.” It’s a cute saying we’d be inclined to double-tap when it comes up in our feed, especially today on International Womens’ Day. But it’s more than a ‘grammable’ quote. It’s a fundamental truth that we see play out in our work each and every day. About a year ago we learned about an amazing group of women doing just that. Supporting each other. Working together. Joining forces, and creating something truly incredible. And this is one of the women at the heart of this story. Her name is N’Mah. And she is…

Why development partnerships are a lot like falling in love

By | Blog, Our amazing team, Setting up a non-profit, Uganda | One Comment

We have a new partner in our life, and we can’t wait for you to meet them. But before we introduce you, we’ve got to back up a bit to answer one of the most common questions we are asked as a non profit: How does One Girl educate girls? Or, how does One Girl actually reach and educate girls in Sierra Leone and Uganda – and how do we know we’re having an impact? There are lots of ways to answer this question, but the first thing we do is we work in partnership. One Girl as an organisation…

“It was a dream come true!” – why the first day of school can mean everything to a girl

By | Blog, Girl's story, Sierra Leone | No Comments

For so many children and parents in Australia, the next couple of weeks are full of excitement, anticipation, and preparations. It’s back to school time. For lots of kids it will be their very first day at school – a huge milestone. It’s the beginning of a journey that will take them over a decade. For any kid starting school – their life is about to change forever. Now their days will be spent in a classroom. Surrounded by their peers. Being taught how to read, how to write, and how to add and subtract. But they’ll be taught more…

It’s back to school for these girls!

By | Blog, Our amazing team, Sierra Leone | No Comments

Something very special happened in Sierra Leone last week. For 300 girls, it was a moment they’d been looking forward to for months, and for some, maybe even years… they started a new school year! Sierra Leone runs on a September – June academic year, so for the past two months our in-country Programs Coordinator, Emmanuel (who you met in our previous blog) and his team have been flat out. If you’ve ever had to get 1-2 kids back to school you’ll know how much running around that can take. So imagine getting 300 girls ready! And this year things were…

The school that took 3 years to build

By | Blog, School Awesomisation, Sierra Leone | 2 Comments

It all sounded so simple. “This school is falling down. The students need a new one. Let’s help the community build it.” We first heard about the Ronietta School’s challenges back in 2013. When the passionate Head Teacher, Mr Kargbo (below, with some of our Scholarship Girls in Ronietta), asked our in-country team to see if they could do something about the school building. It was in disrepair, with cracks appearing across the roof, walls falling down – posing danger to the students who went there. The Ronietta community had already gone to the Sierra Leone government. And appealed to other organisations. But no one…
