Throughout the rest of September I'll be wearing a school dress alongside an amazing team of Women's College residents to raise awareness and funds for girls' equal access to education.
I've been incredibly fortunate to have grown up in a country and a family unit where the ease of access to education for girls has enabled me to attain a high-quality education and transition so easily into further University studies to establish my career.
For me, I'm excited to be fundraising for One Girls 'Girls Emerge' program which provides vocational support for young women in Uganda to learn technical skills such as computer skills, baking or beekeeping so that they can pursue sustainable work within their communities, in addition to life skills including financial literacy and sexual and reproductive health education.
Donations will also fund scholarships (fees, textbooks, hygiene packs and lunch money) for girls in Sierra Leone to complete their high school education within 27 partner schools across the country. This will make a significant impact in increasing the number of girls in Sierra Leone who finish high school, which is currently only 16%; compared to more than 89% of girls in Australia completing year 12!
With around 132 million girls internationally denied an education because of their gender identity, One Girl programs can provide access to meaningful and quality education which we all know an empower girls to bring about personal and community change and break the cycle of poverty.
Any donation, no matter how small, can make a world of difference! Thank you :)
