MORE THAN 130 MILLION GIRLS AROUND THE WORLD ARE DENIED AN EDUCATION.
There are many things that will prevent a girl being educated. But when it comes down to it, the truth is, millions of girls are prevented from going to school, simply because they were born a girl.
In Sierra Leone, nearly 40% of girls are married before they turn 18. It’s a common myth that once a girl gets her period she is ready to be a wife and mother.
EARLY OR FORCED PREGNANCY
Teenage pregnancy is one of the most common reasons for dropping out of school. When girls are married young, have unprotected casual sex, or are sexually assaulted, they often end up caring for a child instead of continuing their education.
More than 70% of people in Sierra Leone earn less than $2 a day. Often it’s difficult to get enough money together to cover food and rent, let alone something as extravagant as school. If a family can afford to send a child to school, the chosen child is almost always a boy.
