Building Confidence and Safety at Our March Meeting

15 Apr 2026

At One Girl, education goes beyond the classroom. It is about creating a safe, supportive environment where girls can learn, grow, and feel confident in themselves.

In March, One Girl students in a rural district of Sierra Leone came together for their monthly meeting. Led by our Programs Director, Sia, the session focused on something every girl deserves to understand: safety, rights, and confidence.

Understanding Safety and Speaking Up

During the session, the girls explored what safeguarding means in their everyday lives. They learned how to recognise unsafe situations, how to trust their instincts, and what steps to take if something does not feel right.

Together, they spoke about their rights and identified trusted adults they can turn to for support. They also learned how to report concerns both within their communities and through One Girl’s support systems.

These are not always easy conversations. But they are essential. When girls understand their rights and know where to seek help, they are better protected and more confident navigating the world around them.

Breaking Down Barriers to Health and Education

The session also covered menstrual health and hygiene, an area that is still surrounded by stigma in many communities.

By creating an open and supportive space, the girls were able to ask questions, share experiences, and build a better understanding of how to care for their bodies. Access to this knowledge helps remove barriers that can keep girls out of school and feeling isolated.

When girls feel confident managing their health, they are more likely to attend school consistently and stay engaged in their education.

More Than a Meeting

Our monthly meetings are about connection, trust, and building confidence.

These sessions give girls the tools they need to speak up, support one another, and take control of their futures. They remind each girl that she is not alone, and that there is a network around her that cares about her safety and wellbeing.

This is what support looks like beyond the classroom.

Creating Lasting Change

When girls are informed, supported, and encouraged to use their voices, they are better able to stay in school and shape their own futures.

That is the impact of your support. By standing with One Girl, you are helping create safe spaces where girls can learn, grow, and thrive.
