More Than a Classroom: Inside Our Impactful Partnership with Plan International Sierra Leone

At One Girl, we know that education doesn’t just happen behind a desk. To truly break down barriers for girls in Sierra Leone, we have to talk about the things that often happen outside the classroom - health, safety, and the power to make decisions about their own bodies.

Recently, our scholars in Mile 91 took part in a transformative monthly meeting that was months in the making. Here’s a look at how we’re working with global partners like Plan International to provide the holistic support girls deserve.

Creating Safe Spaces for Hard Conversations

A few weeks ago, our team reached out to Plan International to request a facility visit and a deep dive into Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) education

The result? An incredible day at the Plan International Adolescent Friendly Center, led by six expert staff members dedicated to empowering the next generation of Sierra Leonean women.

Tailored Knowledge for Every Age

We don't believe in a one size fits all approach. To make sure every scholar received the most relevant, age-appropriate information, we divided the girls into two groups based on their age bracket.

This allowed for a safe and supportive space where girls felt comfortable asking tough questions. When girls have access to the right information at the right time, they gain the confidence to stay in school and take charge of their futures.

What We Covered: A Holistic Curriculum

The sessions were jam-packed with essential life skills and health education. Our scholars dived into:

  • Health & Rights: Family planning, STIs, menstrual hygiene, and the importance of consent.

  • Safety First: Child protection, safeguarding, and stress management.

  • Leadership & Future-Mapping: Communication skills, civics education, and exploring diverse career paths.

  • Mental Wellbeing: Psychological care and, of course, the joy of games and sports!

The Power of Partnership

This milestone wouldn't have been possible without the collaboration of the Plan International team in Mile 91. By opening their doors and sharing their expertise, they’ve helped our scholars build a  shield of knowledge that protects their education and their wellbeing.

When we work together, we don’t just support one girl - we support a movement.
