Every girl deserves to feel safe at school.
Recently, One Girl students took part in hanging safeguarding posters around their school, helping ensure important information about safety, rights, and support is visible to every student.
These posters play an important role in creating safer learning environments. They help girls understand their rights, recognise unsafe situations, and know where they can turn for help if they need support.
Why Safeguarding Matters
For many girls in Sierra Leone, the barriers to education extend beyond the classroom.
Safety concerns, gender-based violence, harassment, and limited access to information can all affect whether a girl feels safe enough to attend school consistently. In fact, an estimated 62% of women aged 15–49 in Sierra Leone have experienced physical or sexual violence.
Without the right support systems in place, these challenges can place a girl’s education at risk.
That is why safeguarding is a key part of One Girl’s work. By making information visible and accessible within schools, girls are reminded that their safety matters and that support is available to them.
Creating Environments Where Girls Can Thrive
At One Girl, we believe girls learn best when they feel safe, supported, and empowered.
Alongside scholarships and school supplies, we work closely with schools and communities to provide mentoring, safeguarding education, and wellbeing support. These initiatives help create environments where girls can focus on learning and building their futures with confidence.
The safeguarding posters are one small but meaningful example of how awareness can lead to safer spaces and stronger support for girls.
Supporting Girls Beyond the Classroom
Girls’ education is about more than access to school. It is about ensuring girls have the protection, knowledge, and support they need to stay there.
Because when girls feel safe, they are better able to learn, grow, and reach their full potential.
