Give the gift
of school
essentials

This Christmas, help cover the costs of education, so girls can get to school and stay in school.

In Sierra Leone, one of the main barriers to girls' education is poverty. And this past year, global conflict and economic challenges has meant the cost of living has DOUBLED with many families now unable to afford everyday essential items. With this increase, families are struggling to cover the costs of education, and unfortunately, it’s often the girls who are the first to miss out...

At One Girl we believe every girl on the planet has the right to an education. However, when families cannot afford to cover the basics, girls stop going to school.

We caught up with Ibrahim, our One Girl Field Officer in Sierra Leone, who helped paint a picture on what is happening over there right now:

“Rice, an essential staple for people, is now DOUBLE the amount it was this time a year ago. Families can no longer afford to buy a bag of rice, so instead they are buying just a cup of rice as that is all they can afford. For our Girls in School scholars, the cost of school uniforms, transportation to and from school, lunch money and school supplies have all doubled in the past year.”

This Christmas, will you help cover the costs of education, so girls can get to school and stay in school?

Mariatu*, a 16 year old scholar in Freetown is immensely grateful for the support she receives from One Girl:

“Since I joined the Girls In School program, each year, One Girl has been providing me with extra classes, lunch money, sanitary pads, menstrual hygiene messages, 2 pairs of school shoes and school uniforms, school books, a backpack, calculator, geometry set, pens, solar light for studying at home and life skill training around advocacy, community service and leadership.

I feel empowered receiving all of these from One Girl as it has given me the opportunity and confidence to go to school and to complete my secondary school education.“

This Christmas, you can help girls like Mariatu, by providing them with school essentials, so that they can get to school, and stay in school:

  • $20 could provide 4 One Girl Scholars with lunch money for one month.
  • $40 can provide a One Girl Scholar with a solar light to help her do homework after school.
  • $112 could provide 2 One Girl Scholars with transport to and from school for an entire school year.
  • $400 can provide 2 One Girl Scholars with a back-to-school kit, which includes a school bag, books, pen, school uniform, ceremonial uniforms, shoes, hats, calculator, geometry set, veil, school belt and much more.
  • $2,200 contributes to supporting a One Girl Scholar inside and outside the classroom for an entire year, by breaking down the financial, cultural, and social barriers a girl in Sierra Leone faces.

There are many barriers girls in Sierra Leone face when it comes to accessing an education. Poverty is one of them. With your help, we can break this barrier so girls can get to school, stay in school and feel empowered to take control of their futures!

Because when you educate a girl, everything changes.

This Christmas, help cover the costs of education, so girls can get to school and stay in school.

*Mariatu's name has been changed to protect her identity.
