 to school.

Support her journey to school by providing essentials such as walking shoes and lunch money.

Imagine having to walk six hours to get to and from school every day...

This is the reality for many girls living in rural Sierra Leone, including 14 year old Adama*:

Adama is determined to go to school, despite having to travel long distances to get there and back:

“ I come from a small village in Sierra Leone and we could not afford to go to school, so I was lucky enough to join One Girl. I walk 14 miles a day to get to and from school. It takes me 3 hours to get to school in the morning and the same to walk back home. I have to walk to and from school as there is no transportation to get to school due to the terrain and it often rains which makes the walk impossible. My shoes are falling apart and they are very uncomfortable. Sometimes I take them off and go barefoot. My friends also have to walk a long distance and sometimes our feet are sore at the end of the day. Having a pair of comfortable new shoes would be amazing and make me happy. I love going to school as I want to study hard so that I can graduate and go to university one day. It is my dream to become a medical doctor to inspire other girls.”

Kadiatu, our One Girl Field Officer in rural Sierra Leone (Tonkolili District), helped us understand how difficult it is for our scholars, just to get to school:

“The situation in Sierra Leone presently is not favourable, especially in that part of the country, Mile 91, where we are based. It's very difficult when it comes to electricity, the food, everything is so expensive, and it's very difficult. Most girls, they go to school without even eating anything. And also, they travel miles to go to school. Sometimes before reaching the schools, all their feet has been dirty with dust and all from the roads and everything.”

A lack of walking shoes can be the one thing that prevents girls from accessing an education in Sierra Leone. This end-of-financial-year, will you help support girls' journey to school?

  • $35 can provide 7 scholars with lunch money for a month
  • $60 can provide 30 scholars with sanitary pads for a month
  • $100 can provide 2 scholars with comfortable walking shoes, to get to school and back
  • $342 can provide 6 scholars with comfortable walking shoes as well as sanitary pads and lunch money for a month.
  • $600 can provide 12 scholars with comfortable walking shoes, to get to school and back
  • $2,200 contributes to supporting a One Girl scholar inside and outside the classroom for an entire year, by breaking down the financial, cultural, and social barriers a girl in Sierra Leone faces.

There are many barriers girls in Sierra Leone face when it comes to accessing an education. With your help, we can provide comfortable walking shoes, sanitary pads, lunch money and other essential items to help girls get to school, stay in school and feel empowered to take control of their futures!

Because when you educate a girl, everything changes.
